The Connecticut Department of Labor and Hartford Athletic jointly announced today that they will be hosting the first annual Veterans and Diversity Hiring Expo at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on September 7, 2021. The event is free to attend and participants are encouraged to register online at www.hartfordathletic.com/Expo. The hiring expo seeks to support those who are underemployed, seeking new career opportunities, or most importantly, directly impacted in their careers by COVID-19. Each registrant will also receive a free ticket to the Hartford Athletic Veterans and Military Appreciation Night match vs. Louisville City FC following the Expo at 7pm. 

"These types of creative partnerships are exactly what our State needs more of to continue to bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic, and grow our economy far into the future," said Governor Ned Lamont. Danny Barrera has been named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 18. This is Barrera's 3rd Team of the Week selection in the 2021 season. 

Barrera's performance on Tuesday night against Charleston Battery was key in earning the honor. Danny had a goal and his league-leading 8th assist in the 2-1 win. The assist was also the 40th of his career, making him the 3rd player ever in USL history to reach the mark. Barrera earned nods for Team of the Week in Weeks 7 and 14 as well.

Jeff Caldwell earned a mention on the Honorable Mention list for the Team of the Week. Jeff, who leads the USL Championship in Saves, has earned an Honorable Mention nod for the second time this season.

USL Championship Team of the Week – Week 18

GK – Andre Rawls, Phoenix Rising FC: Andre Rawls produced a nine-save shutout to earn Phoenix a 0-0 draw against Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday night to maintain the club’s undefeated home record this season.

D – Rashid Tetteh, New Mexico United: The Ghanaian put in a strong performance in New Mexico’s 1-1 draw with Oakland Roots SC, making a key goal line clearance in the second half while winning 8 of 9 duels and making nine recoveries.

D – Jackson Ragen, Tacoma Defiance: The Sounders Academy product continued to come into his own after signing recently with the Defiance and notched the opening goal in Tacoma’s 3-0 win against Orange County SC last Wednesday while also recording nine clearances and completing 54 of 56 passes. 

D – Andre Fox, El Paso Locomotive FC: Andrew Fox had an excellent two-way performance in Locomotive FC’s 3-1 victory against Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday night, recording one assist, two key passes and three shots in attack while winning 3 of 4 tackles and 4 of 6 duels defensively.

**M – Danny Barrera, Hartford Athletic: The Championship’s co-assist leader had a goal as well as his eighth helper of the year in Hartford’s 2-1 win against the Charleston Battery last Tuesday night and also recorded eight key passes while completing 46 of 57 passes and winning 7 of 9 duels in midfield.

M – Miguel Ibarra, San Diego Loyal SC: The former United States international starred as San Diego recorded its biggest win in club history in a 5-1 victory against Las Vegas Lights FC last Wednesday night with one goal, two assists, three shots and six key passes for the hosts at Torero Stadium.

M – Alex Dixon, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC: Alex Dixon continued his outstanding recent run of form as he recorded two assists and five key passes in the attacking half while also winning 7 of 9 duels and 4 of 4 aerial duels in Pittsburgh’s 4-1 win against Atlanta United 2.

M – Ted Ku-DiPietro, Loudoun United FC: The 19-year-old notched the final goal in United’s 4-1 victory against Indy Eleven on Wednesday night to cap a performance that saw him record five shots and six key passes while completing 44 of 50 passes overall.

F – Russell Cicerone, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC: Russell Cicerone scored the first hat trick of his professional career to lead the Hounds to a 4-1 victory against Atlanta United 2 on Sunday night while recording five shots and completing 15 of 20 passes.

F – Billy Forbes, Miami FC: The Turks & Caicos international came on as a halftime substitute against Hartford Athletic on Sunday night and had an immediate impact for the hosts, scoring three minutes into the second half on the way to a pair of goals in a 2-0 victory while also notching two key passes.

Hartford Athletic came up just short, taking on a red hot Miami FC squad, falling 2-0 on a swelteringly hot and humid evening at Riccardo Silva Stadium.  Harry Watling and company find themselves in a three-way tie for fourth place in the USL Championship’s Eastern Conference, Atlantic Division alongside the Charleston Battery and Charlotte Independence. 

Minimal action occurred from both sides up until the 29th minute when Miami forward Lamar Walker weaved through multiple Hartford defenders, freezing Darwin Lom in his tracks, but sailing his point-blank try over the bar.  The home side controlled possession for the rest of the first half, creating multiple scoring opportunities to break open the score before halftime.

After a great diving save from Athletic goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell on Miami’s “Speedy” Williams right-footed strike in the 45th minute, the ball came to FC’s Othello Bah, who was taken down by Hartford midfielder Justin Haak in the box, resulting in a penalty.

Williams, who recently had a two-goal outing in a win over Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, was called to take the try in the 45+1 minute.  His shot to the bottom left corner was denied by a leaping Caldwell and eventually cleared away by Athletic defender Tulu to keep the score level right before halftime.  

There was a new look to Hartford’s lineup following the fifteen-minute break with three substitutions entering the game in what was a lackluster first half.  The team generated only one shot total, which failed to reach on target. 

Miami FC made one change to their lineup and the decision paid off almost immediately.  Substitute Billy Forbes in his first touch rocketed a shot from a tough angle past Caldwell to give his team a crucial 1-0 advantage.  It would be the only lead change of the game. 

Athletic were better offensively in the second half but never dictated the pace of play or strung a number of passes together setting up a threatening chance.  

Caldwell, however, was once again spectacular in goal, with his night highlighted by a sprawling save when Miami appeared to have an open net in the 62nd minute.

Miami tacked on another goal in the 90th minute from Billy Forbes to put the home side up for good 2-0.

Kenan (Kenny) Hot signed a USL Academy contract with Hartford Athletic just last month and has already seen playing time in the USL Championship, including his first start for the club against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on August 7. Signed to help the team while still developing, Hot has been trusted by his coaches to compete at the highest level.

Hot sat down with USL Academy to discuss his move to Hartford from New York Red Bulls Academy, his ambition on the pitch, and what the future has in store.

Q: What did your time with RBNYII playing at the USL Championship level teach you about yourself?

Kenny Hot: I think the biggest thing there was that I was obviously a top player so I was playing every game as Captain and playing a lot of minutes in our age group. When I went to the USL, it was tougher because I wasn't getting as much playing time. I was only 16 when I started playing there, and everyone else was in their 20s and I wasn't really experienced so I wasn't playing a lot of minutes. I was kind of getting angry, I thought I should play like most kids do. I kind of put my head down and was like, ‘I am done. Play me, I'm not gonna do this or that.’ That was the wrong mentality. I think by the end of the season I learned that nobody really cares about your situation if they're doing well. I learned to put my head down and work hard.

Q: How did that academy system, getting some experience in the USL Championship, prepare you for playing now at Hartford?

KH: It definitely helped a ton. I mean, I think dealing with setbacks was one of the biggest things that I learned over there. As far as on-the-field stuff, speed of play, the physicality of playing with grown men as opposed to Under-19s. Also, living similar to the professional life and traveling, staying in hotels, being away from family, I learned to deal with that. I think I'm kind of used to it now.

Q: Why Hartford?

KH: Well, I remember my second pro game ever was against Hartford. It was in Hartford during COVID, so it was very limited fans but I remember the fans were really crazy. I remember saying to myself that I want to play in a place that has fans like this one day. So that's one reason. Another reason is it isn't that far from my house. I didn't want to completely move across the country. Another thing is that I like the way they play. A lot of USL teams play a sort of direct style, and Harford plays patient and keeps the ball which is a system I like playing in.

Q: Has anyone in particular at Hartford who has taken you under their wing?

KH: My roommate, Bradford Jamieson (BJ) stepped up and said, ‘yeah, I'll live with him.’ He's been a pro for a long time. He signed with the Galaxy when he was 17 and he's been playing with some top guys since then. I'm not sure exactly how his journey went but I know he's been put in some really high-level places. He’s shown me things like making sure I’m properly eating lean, not eating too much meat. When something happens on the field, he's been here before and tells me don't sweat it, don't stress.

Q: What's it like to play with those professional players who've had a lot of experience?

KH: We got guys like BJ, Walmer Martinez, who spent the Gold Cup with El Salvador, JC Obregón, who played with Honduras at the Olympics. It's some really high-level players and training with them, the standard is so high in training. I think that that pushes me, even when we do something as simple as a passing drill. It's really high level and if you mess up everyone is angry, but that's how it should be to mentally get better.

Q: How have the coaches helped you adjust?

KH: They've been very helpful. They put me in halftime in the Miami game and said, ‘we trust you, go do your thing,’ and I did really well. The next game, [Harry Watling] started me against Colorado. I think they're very open to giving me opportunities, as long as I prove myself.

Q: How did it feel stepping on to the pitch for the first time in blue and green?

KH: When I played there with Red Bull, I remember getting heckled by supporters getting called things which is frustrating but cool at the same time. Now on the other side of it, when I'm warming up on the sideline, everyone's like ‘Welcome to Hartford’ and ‘Hey, Kenny.’ Kids are asking for autographs. I remember when I went with Red Bull, the drums were so loud. I couldn't hear my teammates and I was getting angry. But this time, I stiIl can’t [hear my teammates], but it was great because they're rooting for us. It's cool that I got to see a different light than I saw the first time.

Q: What are you most looking forward to during your time with Hartford?

KH: Definitely making playoffs. That's something that at Red Bull, I didn't get. But here, I think it's very realistic that we can get to the playoffs and make the run in the playoffs. We have a really, really good team. We've had a little tough span of games but that's partially due to injuries and a lot of traveling. So I think when we're fully healthy, we're dangerous and have a strong chance to be in the playoffs.

Q: What player has inspired you the most?

KH: I think growing up it was [Spanish international Sergio] Busquets. My dad and I, we'd always watch the Barcelona games, and watching Barcelona at a young age I liked the way he would change the games with barely moving. He picks his moments and breaks teams down with his passing. I've always looked at him and he’s so effective, but nobody really noticed that. I always told myself, ‘that’s who I want to model my game after.’ I want to break teams down with my passing and IQ, and he does the defensive side well too. I've always focused on both sides of my game, defensive and offensive.

Q: How do you see American soccer development changing over the next few years?

KH: U.S. Soccer has made a big jump, and started to trust the new generation. I think it's crazy that European clubs are so interested in U.S. players. There are players I've never heard of that are getting sold to the Italian or Belgian clubs. It’s awesome for an American to go to Europe without knowing who they are. Before they were always a big-name American player and I think it's come a long way. The European clubs are very interested now. I played with Caden Clark, and he's going to Red Bull Leipzig. It's really cool to see guys I know moving over. I think the U.S. has come a long way and I think the rest of the world is seeing it too. It’s a good thing.

Q: What advice do you have for players making their way through the academy pathways?

KH: I would definitely say to make sure you play both sides of the ball. I've been to a couple of different clubs recently, whether it be trials or other things, and what I noticed is you can't get anywhere unless you play both sides of the ball. No matter how much your team likes to play on the ball, the coach is never going to play you unless you're focused offensively and defensively. Make sure no matter what position you play, be willing to work defensively.

Kenan (Kenny) Hot signed a USL Academy contract with Hartford Athletic just last month and has already seen playing time in the USL Championship, including his first start for the club against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on August 7. Signed to help the team while still developing, Hot has been trusted by his coaches to compete at the highest level.

Hot sat down with USL Academy to discuss his move to Hartford from New York Red Bulls Academy, his ambition on the pitch, and what the future has in store.

Q: What did your time with RBNYII playing at the USL Championship level teach you about yourself?

Kenny Hot: I think the biggest thing there was that I was obviously a top player so I was playing every game as Captain and playing a lot of minutes in our age group. When I went to the USL, it was tougher because I wasn’t getting as much playing time. I was only 16 when I started playing there, and everyone else was in their 20s and I wasn’t really experienced so I wasn’t playing a lot of minutes. I was kind of getting angry, I thought I should play like most kids do. I kind of put my head down and was like, ‘I am done. Play me, I’m not gonna do this or that.’ That was the wrong mentality. I think by the end of the season I learned that nobody really cares about your situation if they’re doing well. I learned to put my head down and work hard.

Q: How did that academy system, getting some experience in the USL Championship, prepare you for playing now at Hartford?

KH: It definitely helped a ton. I mean, I think dealing with setbacks was one of the biggest things that I learned over there. As far as on-the-field stuff, speed of play, the physicality of playing with grown men as opposed to Under-19s. Also, living similar to the professional life and traveling, staying in hotels, being away from family, I learned to deal with that. I think I’m kind of used to it now.

Q: Why Hartford?

KH: Well, I remember my second pro game ever was against Hartford. It was in Hartford during COVID, so it was very limited fans but I remember the fans were really crazy. I remember saying to myself that I want to play in a place that has fans like this one day. So that’s one reason. Another reason is it isn’t that far from my house. I didn’t want to completely move across the country. Another thing is that I like the way they play. A lot of USL teams play a sort of direct style, and Harford plays patient and keeps the ball which is a system I like playing in.

Q: Has anyone in particular at Hartford who has taken you under their wing?

KH: My roommate, Bradford Jamieson (BJ) stepped up and said, ‘yeah, I’ll live with him.’ He’s been a pro for a long time. He signed with the Galaxy when he was 17 and he’s been playing with some top guys since then. I’m not sure exactly how his journey went but I know he’s been put in some really high-level places. He’s shown me things like making sure I’m properly eating lean, not eating too much meat. When something happens on the field, he’s been here before and tells me don’t sweat it, don’t stress.

Q: What’s it like to play with those professional players who’ve had a lot of experience?

KH: We got guys like BJ, Walmer Martinez, who spent the Gold Cup with El Salvador, JC Obregón, who played with Honduras at the Olympics. It’s some really high-level players and training with them, the standard is so high in training. I think that that pushes me, even when we do something as simple as a passing drill. It’s really high level and if you mess up everyone is angry, but that’s how it should be to mentally get better.

Q: How have the coaches helped you adjust?

KH: They’ve been very helpful. They put me in halftime in the Miami game and said, ‘we trust you, go do your thing,’ and I did really well. The next game, [Harry Watling] started me against Colorado. I think they’re very open to giving me opportunities, as long as I prove myself.

Q: How did it feel stepping on to the pitch for the first time in blue and green?

KH: When I played there with Red Bull, I remember getting heckled by supporters getting called things which is frustrating but cool at the same time. Now on the other side of it, when I’m warming up on the sideline, everyone’s like ‘Welcome to Hartford’ and ‘Hey, Kenny.’ Kids are asking for autographs. I remember when I went with Red Bull, the drums were so loud. I couldn’t hear my teammates and I was getting angry. But this time, I stiIl can’t [hear my teammates], but it was great because they’re rooting for us. It’s cool that I got to see a different light than I saw the first time.

Q: What are you most looking forward to during your time with Hartford?

KH: Definitely making playoffs. That’s something that at Red Bull, I didn’t get. But here, I think it’s very realistic that we can get to the playoffs and make the run in the playoffs. We have a really, really good team. We’ve had a little tough span of games but that’s partially due to injuries and a lot of traveling. So I think when we’re fully healthy, we’re dangerous and have a strong chance to be in the playoffs.

Q: What player has inspired you the most?

KH: I think growing up it was [Spanish international Sergio] Busquets. On Monday, Hartford welcomed Justin Haak back into the fold, taking in the midfielder on loan from NYCFC for the second consecutive season. Haak played 8 matches for Hartford Athletic in 2020 and made an immediate impact in the midfield. He logged 675 minutes, completed 80.5% of his passes, and scored his first professional goal, a right-footed volley off a corner kick in a 3-1 victory over New York Red Bulls II. In his debut match against Charleston, Haak completed 90.6% of his passes and won 75% of his aerial duels.

Soccer is a fickle sport, with results being of utmost importance to fans. Hartford was undefeated 4 matches into the season, and along the way registered their most emphatic win in club history after hammering NYRB II 7-0. Solid form continued throughout the season, until a 4-match winless streak began to worry some. Despite the poor form, the performances were nothing to indicate that the direction of the squad was wrong. After a crucial victory against Charleston that broke the winless streak, Head Coach Harry Watling had this to say “In every season, there’s going to be corners to turn and we’ve had to turn a corner. I felt like the first half tonight was probably the best I’ve seen us play as a total performance so I was really happy.” Harry will look to build on this performance and kick-start a positive run of form. 

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Hartford Athletic, Danny Barrera, MF #10

After registering 50 league appearances for the first time in Hartford’s history, Danny went and dropped another stellar performance, with a goal and an assist against Charleston in what was really a must-win for Hartford to break their winless streak. Danny will want to take that momentum with him away to Miami to help Hartford on a good run of form at the early portion of the second half of the season.

Miami FC, Devon Williams, MF #80

Williams comes into the match against Hartford off the back of two of his best performances this season. In Miami’s 0-0 match against Austin Bold, Williams played all 90 minutes, registering 7 recoveries and an 86% pass success rate. Just 3 days prior to the Austin match, playing in defensive midfield, Devon scored twice in an enthralling 3-2 win against Pittsburgh. Williams is an engine in the midfield, and he will want to take it to Hartford after his 2 stellar recent performances.

Hartford Athletic announced today that Robin Schuppert has been named Director, Academy and W League. Schuppert will oversee the operations of the W League team as well, boys and girls Academy programs, clinics, and all amateur football operations. 

"We are very happy to have Robin join our staff and lead the development of our Academy and W League team,” said Technical Director Luiz Silva. “Through our partnership with AC Connecticut, Robin has a clear understanding of Hartford Athletic’s vision, philosophy and standards to maximize the potential of each project. He has proven his ability to build an academy structure that will prepare our youth soccer players to compete at the highest levels. Directing our new W League side is also incredibly important to the success of the club, and Robin will be given all the resources he needs to create a top-class professional experience for our W League players and staff.” 

As Academy Director, Schuppert will also be in charge of building out Hartford Athletic’s Academy structure. The growth of the Academy program is another important step in developing a professional pathway in Connecticut and will help support both the Men’s and Women’s first teams. Hartford Athletic became a founding member of the USL W League with its initial launch on June 8th. The W League, which strives to develop the next generation of women’s talent both on and off the field, is the nation’s premier pre-professional women’s soccer league that will kick off play in 2022.

The Battery had some dangerous opportunities early but was never able to get into a rhythm and control the pace of play.  Hartford goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell salvaged the most threatening chance in the 7th minute with a brilliant glove save.  The University of Virginia alum was stellar as always, turning in another excellent performance.

The debut of forward Darwin Lom was a major success for Athletic, providing an extra boost of energy to the attack.  His surging chance in the 28th minute went past Battery goalkeeper Paul Lewis but was called back for offside.  Nonetheless, his contributions gained momentum for Hartford, knocking on the door of breaking open the score. 

Glory struck for the Athletic in the 32nd minute on a beautiful cross from forward Danny Barrera to the head of forward Derek Dodson, putting his try past Lewis to give Hartford a 1-0 lead. This made Danny the third player in USL history to record 40 regular season assists. 

Despite the advantage, the Athletic refused to take the foot off of the gas.  Another scoring opportunity was derailed as Dodson was taken down inside the box resulting in a Hartford penalty. 

The captain Barrera stoically stepped up to the spot, striping his try past the diving Lewis into the bottom left corner, giving Hartford a comfortable 2-0 cushion. It was Barrera's fifth goal on the season which leads all players on the club.

The Battery were deflated after a poor 45 minutes but found new life after a Zeiko Lewis cross was flicked on by Claudio Repetto, narrowly skidding past Caldwell and cutting the lead to 2-1 in extra time. 

The second half was more of the same from both sides as Athletic controlled the pace with ease and limited Charleston’s opportunities to maintain the lead.  Hartford triumphed to a 2-1 win in a fantastic all-around performance from the boys in green.

Glory struck for the Athletic in the 32nd minute on a beautiful cross from forward Danny Barrera to the head of forward Derek Dodson, putting his try past Lewis to give Hartford a 1-0 lead. This made Danny the third player in USL history to record 40 regular season assists. 

Despite the advantage, the Athletic refused to take the foot off of the gas.  Another scoring opportunity was derailed as Dodson was taken down inside the box resulting in a Hartford penalty. 

The captain Barrera stoically stepped up to the spot, striping his try past the diving Lewis into the bottom left corner, giving Hartford a comfortable 2-0 cushion. It was Barrera’s fifth goal on the season which leads all players on the club.

The Battery were deflated after a poor 45 minutes but found new life after a Zeiko Lewis cross was flicked on by Claudio Repetto, narrowly skidding past Caldwell and cutting the lead to 2-1 in extra time. 

The second half was more of the same from both sides as Athletic controlled the pace with ease and limited Charleston’s opportunities to maintain the lead.  Hartford triumphed to a 2-1 win in a fantastic all-around performance from the boys in green.

Hartford Athletic announced today that Forward Darwin Lom has been acquired via transfer from California United FC Strikers of the National Independent Soccer Association. Lom will be eligible for tonight’s match against Charleston Battery. 

Lom, who is a Guatemalan International, has made 15 appearances for his national team. Lom earned 4 caps during the 2021-22 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers, scoring goals in wins over the British Virgin Islands and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He also made 3 appearances during the 2021 Gold Cup. On the Club level, Lom played 5 matches for California United FC Strikers in 2021, scoring 1 goal.
