It was a tough night for Athletic, as they conceded three goals for only the second time this season against Charleston Battery at Patriot’s Point on Saturday night. The hosts were deserved winners, as goals from Romario Piggott, Claudio Repetto, and Nicque Daley sealed the three points for the hosts.

Initially, Athletic did not look like a side who would have conceded three goals in the match. They enjoyed good spells of possession to start the match, and were dominant with the ball within the opening twenty minutes. However, the hosts were rigid in defense, and by the 21st minute, they took the lead through a beautiful, curling effort, courtesy of Piggott. Perhaps Athletic’s most clear-cut chance of the game was when Conor McGlynn slipped a wonderful through ball to Preston Tabort Etaka, whose right-footed strike rattled the post and went out for a goal kick.

Athletic entered the second half trailing by only one goal, looking to find the equalizer. Within 18 minutes of the restart, however, the hosts doubled their lead as Repetto curled a lovely effort past the outstretched arms of Jeff Caldwell. Harry Watling made a number of substitutions to impact the balance of play, and the changes made a difference. In the 81st minute, the ball was worked to Danny Barrera from a corner, who delivered a ball to Tulu at the back post. His low, diving header found the back of the net, and made the last 10 minutes an exciting contest.

As Hartford continued to push for an equalizing goal to yet again take points from losing positions, the visitors struck on the counter, as Nicque Daley sent an effort on the counter attack past Caldwell, and sealed a deserved three points for the South Carolina-based side.

Welcome back to 20 Questions with Defender Younes Boudadi. Younes tells us who he'd support in a match between his two home countries – Belgium and Morocco, what ruling he would change in soccer, and his take on Tik Tok!

1) You started your footballing journey with Club Brugge when you were 7. What was it like being in such a famous club at such a young age and how was your experience during your time there?

YB: It was an amazing experience. That’s really where I became a footballer – they taught me so much technically and tactically. I was playing all over the park there, and learned so much for my thirteen years at Club Brugge.

2) What is your favorite memory of growing up in Belgium?

YB: I think getting to know Brugge was amazing. I lived an hour away from the academy so I went from commuting to the academy, to living with a host family and then living on my own once I got older. I think that experience of exploring Brugge on my own was so pivotal in my growth, and Brugge itself is so beautiful. 

3) Do you still support Club Brugge or do you have another team who you support?

YB: Oh, of course – it’s always been the club that is closest to my heart. They shaped me into the player I am today, and wherever I go, I know that they’ll be the club that I always support. I do also support Arsenal though!

4) You played for two different Division 1 schools in college soccer. What were the differences between playing youth football in Europe and playing in college?

YB: The first thing I noticed is that it is way more physical. Growing up, I had the privilege to train technically and tactically; however, I kind of neglected the physical part of the game for much of my youth career. Once I arrived in the United States, I started lifting more and did more work on my body, and that’s helped me to develop another part of the game

5) You have represented Morocco at youth level, including participating in the 2013 U-17 World Cup. What was that experience like?

YB: It was great because, while I grew up in Belgium, my dad is Moroccan. I got to discover my roots doing what I loved. That opportunity actually came around when the head of the Moroccan national team was in town to scout a Dutch talent at a tournament that I was playing in. I ended up having such a good tournament that he contacted me and, within one year, I was playing for Morocco in a World Cup.

6) Who is the best player in the current Morocco national team in your opinion?

YB: I think it would be Hakim Ziyech or Achraf Hakimi, but I would choose Hakim because he plays in the same position as me. He was actually at one of those camps that I was at, only he was 2 years younger than me, and playing as a winger. Of course, he then shifted to right back once he was at Real’s academy, but you could tell there was something special about him as a player.

7) Which do you prefer: club football or international football?

YB: Club football. I’ve been in love with Arsenal since I was little when I went to a match at the Emirates. Other than Arsenal, I love the style of Liverpool and City – even though they’ve been beating up on my team lately! Those two teams are so great to watch, especially when you see the game as a student, as well as a fan.

8) What would you say is the key to the USMNT winning a World Cup?

YB: In the long run, first and foremost they [USSF] should change the system with how the leagues are set up. I think by having teams fight out for promotion and relegation, there is a greater sense of competition and would certainly draw better players to come and compete in American leagues. I also think investing more in youth academies instead of pay-to-play systems. If parents can’t afford to pay for their child to play football, they should still be able to send their kids to academies, because there are talented players who slip through the cracks because they cannot afford to play. I also think that the MLS should remove the salary cap, and their restrictions on transfers.

9) Who is the best manager of all time?

YB: I think it’s Pep Guardiola – I think Mourinho has to be up there as well. I’m not a fan of Mourinho’s style personally, but he’s won everywhere he has gone, whether it’s with Porto, Chelsea, or Inter. They’ve both changed the game in different ways and will leave behind huge legacies.

10) What is one rule that you would add to the game worldwide if you were a FIFA executive?

YB: Ah this is such a tough question – I would add an assist when you draw a penalty. Imagine that you were on a crazy run and you get into the box. You’re about to score, then you’re fouled and someone else takes the penalty – shouldn’t you get some credit for that? That would be my rule.

11) You’ve had an excellent start to the season in that right back/right-wing back position. What do you think has been the key to that success?

YB: When the coaching staff came in they quickly found the strengths of our squad. That was so crucial because now we have multiple systems we can play – we can play a four at the back or three at the back, but our setup is specifically tweaked for our roster. I think what’s more important is that we never switch our style of play, but those little tweaks have helped both myself and the whole squad to be successful.

12) Have you always played at fullback?

YB: I think, like everyone, when I was little I started as a striker. Once I got to Brugge, I was played as a winger before we started to play with eleven-a-side. Once that happened, my coach saw qualities in me that would help the team if I were at the back. During my time at Brugge, however, I was played as a number 6 (holding midfielder), a winger, and a right back because, the more you play different positions on the pitch the better player you become.

13) What is the best vacation spot you have ever been to?

YB: Probably Morocco! When I was a kid, we went there to see family for a couple of weeks and it was always just the best. For cities in Morocco, I really like Marakesh, but we’d also go to Agadir, which is a city at the beach. 

14) You’re attending a game at Dillon. What is one food and one drink that you would like to see on the menus?

YB: I would love to see some Belgian waffles on the menu! For an alcoholic drink, I would say a tequila pineapple cocktail would be a great addition, and for a non-alcoholic drink, I’d stick to water.

15) Who is the one person in the squad who is always late?

YB: If this was when I was at Reno FC, I would have said Jiggy [Thomas Janjigian]! He was always late at Reno, but he hasn’t been late for this team. Everyone has been on time this year, and a lot of guys carpool as well so that’s helped. When Jiggy and I were at Reno FC, he was the one who guided me through my rookie season when I wasn’t getting the opportunities I wanted. He’s definitely one of the best center-backs I’ve ever played alongside. 

16) What is your favorite thing about being in Hartford?

YB: I haven’t been to a baseball game yet but I’d like to get there and experience the atmosphere! There is also this wonderful Mediterranean place in Hartford I enjoy going to, and Parkville Market is another wonderful area that the entire squad enjoys going to.

17) Belgium and Morocco are playing each other in the World Cup final: who are you rooting for?

YB: That’s a difficult one – if I’m being honest, (and I know I’ll get a lot of texts from my Moroccan friends about this one) I’d be rooting for Belgium. When I was young, that was the country my friends and I were supporting, but Morocco has really come on in the last few years. I missed being in Belgium in the World Cup semi-final

18) Who has the best style in the dressing room?

YB: Oh, I definitely have some of the best style! Bradford has good style for sure, Jeff has a different style than me but it’s good style. Nico is also up there with the best dressed, but put Conor in there for the worst for his small Dwight from The Office t-shirt! (Laughs)

19) You get a recovery day from Coach Watling: how are you choosing to spend it?

YB: Sleeping in for sure! I like to try different restaurants on off days. Usually, a couple of the guys in the squad set up new places for us to try and we’re all new to the town so it’s a good way for our team to continue bonding.

20) What is your take on TikTok?

YB: I never really liked it and I refuse to download it as well! It makes me feel a little old that I don’t have it though because I’ll say “ look at this new generation with their new apps!”

YB: I think it’s Pep Guardiola – I think Mourinho has to be up there as well. I’m not a fan of Mourinho’s style personally, but he’s won everywhere he has gone, whether it’s with Porto, Chelsea, or Inter. They’ve both changed the game in different ways and will leave behind huge legacies.

10) What is one rule that you would add to the game worldwide if you were a FIFA executive?

YB: Ah this is such a tough question – I would add an assist when you draw a penalty. Imagine that you were on a crazy run and you get into the box. You’re about to score, then you’re fouled and someone else takes the penalty – shouldn’t you get some credit for that? That would be my rule.

11) You’ve had an excellent start to the season in that right back/right-wing back position. What do you think has been the key to that success?

YB: When the coaching staff came in they quickly found the strengths of our squad. That was so crucial because now we have multiple systems we can play – we can play a four at the back or three at the back, but our setup is specifically tweaked for our roster. I think what’s more important is that we never switch our style of play, but those little tweaks have helped both myself and the whole squad to be successful.

12) Have you always played at fullback?

YB: I think, like everyone, when I was little I started as a striker. Once I got to Brugge, I was played as a winger before we started to play with eleven-a-side. Once that happened, my coach saw qualities in me that would help the team if I were at the back. During my time at Brugge, however, I was played as a number 6 (holding midfielder), a winger, and a right back because, the more you play different positions on the pitch the better player you become.

13) What is the best vacation spot you have ever been to?

YB: Probably Morocco! When I was a kid, we went there to see family for a couple of weeks and it was always just the best. For cities in Morocco, I really like Marakesh, but we’d also go to Agadir, which is a city at the beach. 

14) You’re attending a game at Dillon. What is one food and one drink that you would like to see on the menus?

YB: I would love to see some Belgian waffles on the menu! For an alcoholic drink, I would say a tequila pineapple cocktail would be a great addition, and for a non-alcoholic drink, I’d stick to water.

15) Who is the one person in the squad who is always late?

YB: If this was when I was at Reno FC, I would have said Jiggy [Thomas Janjigian]! He was always late at Reno, but he hasn’t been late for this team. Everyone has been on time this year, and a lot of guys carpool as well so that’s helped. When Jiggy and I were at Reno FC, he was the one who guided me through my rookie season when I wasn’t getting the opportunities I wanted. He’s definitely one of the best center-backs I’ve ever played alongside. 

16) What is your favorite thing about being in Hartford?

YB: I haven’t been to a baseball game yet but I’d like to get there and experience the atmosphere! There is also this wonderful Mediterranean place in Hartford I enjoy going to, and Parkville Market is another wonderful area that the entire squad enjoys going to.

17) Belgium and Morocco are playing each other in the World Cup final: who are you rooting for?

YB: That’s a difficult one – if I’m being honest, (and I know I’ll get a lot of texts from my Moroccan friends about this one) I’d be rooting for Belgium. When I was young, that was the country my friends and I were supporting, but Morocco has really come on in the last few years. I missed being in Belgium in the World Cup semi-final

18) Who has the best style in the dressing room?

YB: Oh, I definitely have some of the best style! Bradford has good style for sure, Jeff has a different style than me but it’s good style. Nico is also up there with the best dressed, but put Conor in there for the worst for his small Dwight from The Office t-shirt! (Laughs)

19) You get a recovery day from Coach Watling: how are you choosing to spend it?

YB: Sleeping in for sure! I like to try different restaurants on off days. Usually, a couple of the guys in the squad set up new places for us to try and we’re all new to the town so it’s a good way for our team to continue bonding.

20) What is your take on TikTok?

YB: I never really liked it and I refuse to download it as well! It makes me feel a little old that I don’t have it though because I’ll say “ look at this new generation with their new apps!”

Derek Dodson’s 23rd minute header was enough for Hartford to pick up a massive three points against Atlantic Division rivals, Tampa Bay Rowdies. Jeff Caldwell, Tulu, Arthur Rogers, Alex Lara, Thomas Janjigian, Younes Boudadi and Nico Cardona all put in stellar defensive displays to keep the Rowdies’ attacking unit at bay, and begin this week’s road trip on a high note.

The opening few minutes of the match were a telling sign of how proceedings would go, as Boudadi did just enough defensively to throw off Sebastian Guenzatti, who skied Dayonn Harris’ low cross from just a few yards out. Hartford had a chance of their own just a few minutes later, as Christian Gómez made the first of many wonderful, forward passes to set up Dodson. His cross found Sebastian Elney, whose shot was well-saved by Evan Louro.

After back-to-back chances for the hosts, including a Guenzatti strike which struck the base of the post, Athletic found the breakthrough courtesy of Dodson. Rogers played a wonderful ball over the top for Preston Tabort Etaka. After a few touches on the left-hand side, Preston’s stunning cross found the onrushing Dodson, who leapt highest to head home his second goal in two matches. The end of the first half set the tone for how much of the game would pan out, as Athletic called upon the goalkeeper Caldwell to make a string of brilliant saves to deny the Rowdies, including a point-blank reflex save from Guenzatti’s headed effort. 

Harry Watling deserves a huge amount of credit for his shrewd substitutions in the second half. Knowing that the match was becoming a cagey affair, the introductions of Conor McGlynn and Alex Lara would be crucial in sealing the three points for Hartford. As the match wore on, the Rowdies threw everything at Caldwell’s goal; however, he and the Athletic defense were equal to it, as Tulu, Lara, and Janjigian all produced moments of sheer class to preserve the clean sheet, and seal Athletic’s first win at Al Lang Stadium.

A dazzling start to the season for Hartford Athletic has seen numerous players step into the limelight and deliver exceptional performances on the pitch.  With four goals in the young season, Forward Preston Tabort Etaka stands amongst the most notable contributors on the attack and brings an element of starpower to the team that makes him one of the most entertaining players to watch in the USL Championship.  

Born in Bamenda, Cameroon, Preston comes from humble beginnings and grew up in a small, close-knit family.  His parents always preached that education was the number one priority, but soccer was Preston’s passion and he fell in love with the game at an early age.  To Cameroonians, soccer is not just a game or a sport that is played by many, it is a way of life and beloved by its people.

“We are known for playing soccer in Cameroon”, Tabort Etaka, 23, said.  “If you want to be a soccer player, you have to be the best.  “That’s how it is in Africa.”

Preston too had the desire to be great.  His family supported him every step of the way in hopes of achieving his dream to one day play professionally.  He credits his father and younger brother for spending hours outside practicing to help develop his skills rain or shine. 

“When I was little, my dad used to set up a goal for me and my younger brother to play 1 v 1”, Tabort Etaka said. “[My brother] was always physical and my dad would tell me that’s how the game is [played]. My dad then discovered that I really loved soccer, so he would push me and do a lot of training.  It was really important that he helped me.”

From the age of nine years old, Preston left his family often to play tournaments for PWD Bamenda’s academy, the team he played on for most of his adolescence.  Being away from his loved ones at first was difficult, but Tabort Etaka was well aware of the sacrifice he was making to help his game blossom to soaring heights.

After careful thought and deliberation with his family, Preston decided to take his talents to the U.S. when he was 18.  His first stop was with USL Championship foe Charlotte Independence, but the Cameroonian did not make any appearances for the team in his time there. 

“At first it was tough trying to get used to the system”, Tabort Etaka said. “I was someone that was really hungry to play, but it didn’t really work out there in the end.”

In February of 2021, Preston signed with Hartford Athletic as one of the 16 new additions to the Green and Blue.  He has enjoyed his experience with the club so far and says the atmosphere around the team is like a family, which has contributed vitally to the team’s success on the pitch.

“We have different talents and we are from all over the world”, Tabort Etaka said.  “To be on a team like this is amazing.” We live like a family and that’s what makes us so strongly connected.”

Preston has high expectations for the team going forward and is confident that the boys in green can bring a title home to Hartford.

Hartford Athletic miraculously came back from the brink of defeat to tie things up 2-2 and escape Dillon Stadium with a crucial point.

In this contest, the Red Bulls II came out firing early, resulting in a goal scored by Forward Omar Sowe in just the 4th minute.  After receiving a pass, Sowe swiftly dribbled down the right sideline firing a shot at Hartford Athletic Goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell, who made the save but Sowe was able to follow up on a rebound that he calmly put in the back of the net.

The possession was not in Hartford’s favor for a large portion of the first half, and not long after a second goal was tallied for the Red Bulls II on a strike from Matthew Acosta in the 18th minute.  It was the first time all season that Hartford Athletic trailed by more than one goal.

Harry Watling and company needed to regroup fast if they wanted to mount a comeback.

To spark some new energy on the pitch, Watling subbed in forward Derek Dodson at the 42 minute mark.  The 2021 MLS Super Draft 1st round pick is on loan from MLS side Orlando City SC and made his much anticipated team debut with the green and blue. 

For much of the second half, the game was very chippy.  Both sides were very physical and assessed numerous yellow cards for foul play.  The most significant of all occurred in the 83’, when defender Emir Tombul was sent off after a second yellow card for committing a dangerous slide tackle on Hartford Athletic Forward Jeciel Cedeño.  With the Red Bulls II undermanned for the rest of the match, Hartford turned on the attack.

After a lightning quick run down the left sideline, Forward Preston Tabort Etaka crossed in a beautiful ball to the newcomer Dodson, putting the ball in the back of the net to put Hartford down by just one goal.

Little time remained on the clock, and Hartford needed some late game magic to tie things up at two apiece.  All 11 for the Athletic emptied their tanks and created many chances.  In the 92’, a rebound came rolling out to Defender Thomas Janjigian right around the 18’.  After taking a touch to his left foot, Janjigian rocketed a shot off the crossbar and in past the goalie Marcucci.  The 5,000 plus fans at Dillon erupted in exuberance as Hartford got their equalizer.  The goal was Janjigian’s second goal as a professional, and marked the first time he hit the back of the net since 2019.

The intensity for Hartford really picked up in the waning stages of the match, valiantly roaring back from the jaws of defeat to secure a point in the USL Championships Eastern Atlantic Conference.  Watling and company now have a big week ahead of them, with a road match on Tuesday July 13 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies and a matchup with the Charleston Battery on Saturday July 17.

Hartford Athletic miraculously came back from the brink of defeat to tie things up 2-2 and escape Dillon Stadium with a crucial point.

Hartford Athletic announced today that forward Derek Dodson has joined the club on loan from Orlando City SC pending league and federation approval. Dodson will be available for selection Saturday night. 

Taken by Orlando with the eighth overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, Dodson made his name known with Georgetown University, scoring 32 goals in 72 appearances, including a goal in Georgetown’s run to the 2019 NCAA National Championship title. Derek is no stranger to individual awards as well, being a three-year First Team Big East selection, as well as the 2017 Big East Freshman of the Year.  

"We are excited to bring Derek as a part of the family. It is a huge sign of respect from Orlando City to trust us with his development via a loan," said Hartford Athletic Head Coach Harry Watling. " Derek is an exciting player who will bolster our attacking talent and bring goals to the team."

Originally from Aurora, Illinois, the former Georgetown captain has multiple traits that will help Athletic in front of goal. During his time in Washington DC, Derek’s positional awareness and composure in front of goal were just two of his most impressive traits. Dodson’s goal-scoring prowess will further bolster the most talented forward line in Hartford Athletic history who will be without Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. and Walmer Martinez as they compete with their national teams in the Olympics and Gold Cup respectively.
