Goalkeeper John Berner brings over 10 years of professional experience to the Hartford Athletic squad. Selected 35th overall in the MLS SuperDraft, Berner began his career with the Colorado Rapids in 2014. From 2015-16, the St. Louis, Missouri native made 38 appearances and recorded 12 clean sheets while on loan to USL League One side Charlotte Independence. After stints with Phoenix Rising, OKC Energy FC, and a return home to Saint Louis FC in 2020, Berner joined USL Championship club Memphis 901 FC in 2021. He played every minute of the season, setting a club record for most saves in a single match (9) and ranking third in club history at the time, for saves in a single season (27). Berner earned a spot on the USL Championship Team of the Week in 2022 after back-to-back shutouts to help Memphis claim the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. In 2023, Berner transitioned into a dual role as player and goalkeeping coach with Huntsville City FC in MLS NEXT Pro, making eight starts and 28 saves. He joins Hartford Athletic after a short-term, 25-day contract with USL Championship side FC Tulsa.
