SEEING IT OUT:

4 points are all that separates 4th-6th in the Atlantic Division table. A crushing Tampa winner in the 85th minute stripped the Athletic of a crucial point away. In Hartford’s most recent outing at home against Louisville, Hartford clawed back from two goals down to enter the half level. Despite coming back, they couldn’t see out the game despite a resilient effort to do so. Just 3 shots and 9 fouls conceded in the second half reflect the stats of a team doing everything they can to hold on. The defensive struggles continue for Hartford Athletic who fell to Central Division leader Louisville City FC 4-2 at Dillon Stadium on Tuesday night. 

Louisville opened the match on the front foot. Midfielder Brian Ownby showed why he wears the number 10, maneuvering up the right sideline, battling Preston Tabort Etaka in the box and finding leading scorer Cameron Lancaster who slipped the ball through Goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell's legs for the opening goal. Hartford generated chances through the next twenty minutes, but Louisville found an opportunity to double their lead. Jorge Gonzalez chased down a long ball into the box wrestled with Thomas Janjigian to come away with the ball and beat Caldwell to the near post for the second goal of the night.

But Hartford had an answer in the form of Preston Tabort Etaka. Preston had dominated his matchup on the righthand side all evening and was determined to make a play. He pushed the ball up the pitch and deep into the box, crossed to Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. in front of the net who tapped home a goal to cut the lead in half. Obregón Jr. is now tied for the team lead with six goals on the season.

Thirteen minutes later, Hartford equalized, once again working up the right side. Tabort Etaka dropped a ball off for Younes Boudadi who delivered a beautiful cross to Derek Dodson at the far post. Dodson headed in the equalizer and Hartford headed into the half with momentum.

But in the second half, Louisville pulled away. In the 56th minute, off a set piece, Brian Ownby leapt over the Hartford defense and headed in the go-ahead goal. Three minutes later, Antoine Hoppenot put on a display with a beautiful curling ball out of the reach of a diving Caldwell which extended the lead back to two goals. Hartford searched for an answer, but were unable to find the tying goal.

Hartford is back in action on Saturday night with a huge match on the road against Charlotte Independence at 7 PM. Hartford is currently just one point back of Charlotte in the race for the final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. Lancaster's talent is undeniable and the Forward has consistently been one of the league's top scorers. This year, he leads LouCity with 11 goals, good for fourth best in the entire USL Championship. Lancaster has burned Athletic before, coming on as a substitute for Nashville SC in Hartford's inaugural season in 2019 and striking a beautiful right-footed curler to the far post for the go ahead goal in a 3-2 loss for the home side. Lancaster will surely be a marked man in Hartford's attempt to shut down the main point of Louisville's attack.

On a night filled with optimism that this Hartford squad would pick up its first road victory since a 1-0 victory at Tampa Bay on July 13th, the visitors came up empty, falling to New York Red Bulls II 2-0. It's the club's first loss to RBII since 2019.

Hartford opened the match with energy and excitement. In the first ten minutes, Arthur Rogers and Derek Dodson controlled play up the right hand side of the pitch. The two worked together to find Preston Tabort Etaka three times for chances inside the box, but with either his head or his feet, the Cameroonian forward was unable to find the back of the net. Moments later, Red Bulls II found their answer. Jake LaCava took a pass from Omar Sowe in stride and made his way up the pitch, into the box, and finished with a powerful left footed strike past the arms of a diving Carlos Merancio for the early lead. Merancio made his first start in goal for Hartford and made 4 saves in the opening stanza.

In the second half, Hartford failed to generate much in the way of an exciting chance. Alfonso Vazquez and Kenan Hot were brought on in the 55th minute to give the attack a different look but failed to make an immediate impact. In the 80th minute Bradford Jamieson IV came on and just second later had the visitors' best chance of the night. Arthur Rogers delivered a beautiful ball through to Jamieson who dribbled into the box and shot past an on-rushing keeper but his shot just missed and went into the side netting keeping RBII's sheet clean. In stoppage time, after a misplay by the back line, Serge Ngoma found himself all alone against Jeff Caldwell, who subbed in for an injured Merancio, and doubled the lead.

Hartford Athletic are back in action on Tuesday night at Dillon Stadium against Louisville City FC at 7 PM. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. On a night filled with optimism that this Hartford squad would pick up its first road victory since a 1-0 victory at Tampa Bay on July 13th, the visitors came up empty, falling to New York Red Bulls II 2-0. It’s the club’s first loss to RBII since 2019.

Hartford opened the match with energy and excitement. In the first ten minutes, Arthur Rogers and Derek Dodson controlled play up the right hand side of the pitch. The two worked together to find Preston Tabort Etaka three times for chances inside the box, but with either his head or his feet, the Cameroonian forward was unable to find the back of the net. Moments later, Red Bulls II found their answer. Jake LaCava took a pass from Omar Sowe in stride and made his way up the pitch, into the box, and finished with a powerful left footed strike past the arms of a diving Carlos Merancio for the early lead. Merancio made his first start in goal for Hartford and made 4 saves in the opening stanza.

In the second half, Hartford failed to generate much in the way of an exciting chance. Alfonso Vazquez and Kenan Hot were brought on in the 55th minute to give the attack a different look but failed to make an immediate impact. In the 80th minute Bradford Jamieson IV came on and just second later had the visitors’ best chance of the night. Arthur Rogers delivered a beautiful ball through to Jamieson who dribbled into the box and shot past an on-rushing keeper but his shot just missed and went into the side netting keeping RBII’s sheet clean. In stoppage time, after a misplay by the back line, Serge Ngoma found himself all alone against Jeff Caldwell, who subbed in for an injured Merancio, and doubled the lead.

Hartford Athletic are back in action on Tuesday night at Dillon Stadium against Louisville City FC at 7 PM. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. CG: It means a lot of different things; I was both raised there and that’s where I first played soccer. It means everything to me. 

2) How does your Venezuelan background influence your way of playing soccer?

CG: For me, the technical aspect. We are good on the ball and we constantly are with the ball at our feet.

3) Who was your childhood soccer hero?

CG: Being from Venezuela, there was a Venezuelan player named Edgar Jimenez. I always said I wanted to be like him and to play like him. From Europe I’ve always liked Iniesta.

4) You make your professional debut at 18 years old; how did you feel in that first game?

CG: On that day I was a little nervous, but once I got on the field to warm up my nerves went away.

5) Did you feel part of the team since you were so young, or did it bring a lot of pressure being so young?

CG: No, no I didn’t feel that much pressure on me. I had had time training with the team, and almost all of us were friends and knew each other very well.

6) When you won the Venezuelan Cup in your first season, you must’ve been really proud. How did it feel to win a trophy in your home country?

CG: That was the best for me. My first cup in Venezuela was something inexplicable. It has been the best thing that has happened to me until now.

CG: Messi, because I just like how he plays more

8) In 2018, you were loaned to Atletico San Francisco in the DR. What were, if any, the biggest differences between Venezuela and DR soccer wise?

CG: In Venezuela the soccer is better. It’s more technical, more physical, more playing. In the Dominican Republic it’s less quality, because of the league. So, I went to the DR, I was motivated to go for personal reasons, just because I wanted to play, and at that time in 2018 I wasn’t playing. So I went, we got to the final, we lost, but in the end I returned to Venezuela.

9) What did you learn with your time in the DR?

CG: Maturity. When I went to the DR I learned a lot, and I think that it was a good experience too because it was the first time abroad and it was a good learning experience. 

10) What is your favorite Venezuelan dish?

CG: My favorite food has to be fried chicken or fried potato, but Venezuelan it has to be the Venezuelan arepa, it’s the best of the best around.

11) How did you feel about the opportunity to play for Hartford Athletic?

CG: Well, immediately I said I’m going. My representative came to me and said “this team in the US wants you” and I didn’t even think twice about it. I wanted to come, I was anxious to play, to get to know this country.

12) Who is the best player of all time?

CG: I think that Ronaldinho is the best.

13) How did your parents react when you decided to come here to play?

CG: My parents were happy for me, they wanted for me to leave Venezuela due to the situation in our country and all that. They wanted me to leave Venezuela and to no longer play there, and they told me to go; and thank God that this opportunity came and I didn’t think twice about it. It was a new future for me.

14) How has your family played a role in your passion for soccer?

CG: My mom said that my dad played but I’ve never seen him play. My dad says he was super good. Once I got older, I’d tell him “Hey come out and play!” but he wouldn’t. I learned to play in the streets by myself. When I was 4 would play in front of my house, and from there I kept going, and when I was 5 I signed up for a school with a team where the team I debuted for was from. At 16 I played in the second division, and then a pro at 18. 

15) What are your goals as a professional player for the future?

CG: My goal is to play in Europe, to play in the first tier of a league in Europe. I want to play in an elite league. 

16) What is your favorite movie?

CG: I’m not one to watch a lot of TV, but I liked Tom and Jerry and Spongebob.

17) How does it feel to play at home in front of the fans at Dillon Stadium?

CG: It feels great, it’s a great place to play. 

18) Describe to me how it has felt to grow as a player in 3 different countries at such a young age. Have you enjoyed the journey so far?

CG: Well, I continuously adapt to the country. It has been complicated learning the language. On the field for example I now understand a lot of what I hear on the field from the coach and the players.
