Hartford Athletic have signed goalkeeper Sam Howard for the remainder of the 2022 season, pending league and federation approval.
Howard has played in the USL Championship with former clubs Fresno FC in 2018 and 2019, and with OKC Energy in 2021. He made 68 appearances for IFK Åmål of the Swedish second division across two seasons in 2016 and 2017, posting a 48–15–5 record with 16 clean sheets. In 2016, Howard earned the Dalsland Goalkeeper of the year award.
The Takoma Park, Maryland native played collegiately for Kenyon College, Lasalle University, and eventually returned close to home to play his senior year at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He started all 18 games in 2015 and made 78 saves on the season.
Howard joins Yannik Oettl, Jimmy Slayton, and Sebastian Pliszka as goalies currently on the Hartford Athletic roster. Slayton underwent surgery on his knee earlier this week and is expected to return in four to six weeks.
Hartford Athletic returns to action tomorrow night, July 23rd, when they host Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC at 7:00 PM. Fans interested in purchasing tickets should visit hartfordathletic.com/single.
