HISTORY TO BE MADE
Athletic makes its second straight and third overall appearance in the USL Championship playoffs after gathering 43 points in the regular season by way of 10 wins and 13 draws. The club still seeks its first-ever USL Championship playoff win after falling to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on penalty kicks in the first round a season ago. The side drew a gritty opponent in Detroit City FC, which has lost just one match at Keyworth Stadium and conceded the fewest goals in the league during regular season play. However, the Boys in Green head into Friday’s contest fresh off a 2-1 win over Rhode Island FC and look to be the healthiest they have been all season long.
SCOUTING REPORT
Detroit City FC returns to the USL Championship playoffs for the sixth straight season after scoring one of the biggest victories in the tournament a season ago, shutting out top-seeded Louisville City FC in the opening round as the eighth seed. In the regular season, Detroit City FC sported a 14-7-9 overall record in league play, including a 10-1-4 mark on home turf. Hartford took a 2-1 victory over Detroit City back on May 9 before earning a point by way of a 1-1 draw on September 5. Goalkeeper Carlos Herrera won the league’s Golden Glove honors, leading the USL Championship with 14 clean sheets, while Darren Smith led the side with 14 goals, the fifth-most league-wide.
BEFORE THE HUDDLE
“We have come so far as a club in the last three years, regularly setting new bars for ourselves in multiple competitions,” said Head Coach Brendan Burke. “The Detroit City FC game is an opportunity to again show how far we have come against a team that has been excellent at home this year.”
