HARTFORD ATHLETIC VS. CHARLOTTE INDEPENDENCE
WHEN: Wednesday, August 12th, 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: Mecklenburg County Sportsplex at Matthews, Matthews, NC
HOW TO WATCH: The WAX, ESPN+
CUP DEFENSE CONTINUES
Hartford meets Charlotte while already making Prinx Tires USL Cup history. They are currently riding the longest undefeated streak in tournament history—11 matches, dating back to April 2025. As the winners of last season’s Jägermeister Cup, Athletic advanced to the quarterfinal round following a 3–0–1 record in the group stage. The ultimate clincher came from a 2–1 win over USL League One’s Westchester SC. Despite still suffering from the injury bug, Hartford brings a historic run into Wednesday’s matchup—a stretch they don’t want to see end just yet.
SCOUTING REPORT
Charlotte Independence heads into the quarterfinal round with a 12-4-3 overall record in USL League One action and a 2-0-2 run in the group stage of the Prinx Tires USL Cup. The club arrives at Wednesday’s matchup riding a three-match winning streak, most recently shutting out Greenville Triumph SC by a score of 1-0. Souaibou Marou and Luis Alvarez form a two-headed monster for Charlotte, combining for 19 goals on the season, with the latter leading the league with 10 goals of his own.
BEFORE THE HUDDLE
“This match presents another massive step forward for our club. 43 professional teams entered this year’s competition and there are only 4 matches tomorrow, with 8 teams still pushing for a trophy,” said General Manager and Head Coach Brendan Burke. “Our opponents have been excellent this year and already knocked out some big clubs, so we are going in with respect for what we know will be a huge opportunity and a very difficult match.”
