BURLINGTON, VT – Despite a second-half surge from the opposition, Hartford Athletic held on and forced United Soccer W League Northeast Division rival Vermont Green FC to a 1-1 tie in league action on Friday night.
With the tie, both clubs now hold respective 3-0-3 records with Hartford still owning first-place in the division on a goals-for tiebreaker.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hartford wasted little time breaking the scoreless draw as Diana Baffor notched her second goal in as many matches in the seventh minute. Athletic had a pair of chances from Rachel Wygant and Ashley Reyes in the 14th and 24th minutes, respectively, with the former hitting the goal mounts and the latter being stopped.
- Vermont Green FC knotted the score at one-all in the 34th minute as Emily Mara rippled twine. The hosts had a pair of chances in the later going of the first half with both opportunities being denied.
- The two clubs traded a slew of opportunities in the second half, first with Vermont Green FC ripping four tries towards goal with one hitting iron and another being denied. Reyes had a try for Hartford in stoppage time that proved unsuccessful.
- Lana Gibbs finished the night with three saves for Athletic.
