Hartford Athletic Puts in Strong Performance Against Defending Champs

HARTFORD ATHLETIC COMES UP JUST SHORT 2-1

LOUISVILLE, KY – Hartford Athletic took the early lead against the two-time defending champions Lousiville City FC. Athletic striker Jose Angulo whipped in a beautiful ball in the 6' to a sliding Jonny Brown who finished his first goal of the season.

Louisville City FC striker Luke Spencer answered in the 14' finishing a well-worked build up to even up the score 1-1. Athletic continued to create great chances throughout the first half only to see an unlucky deflection by defender Sem De Wit hit the back of the Hartford net for an own goal in the 33'.

After returning from the locker room for the second half, Hartford Athletic created chance after chance throughout a dominant second half that was the best of the season for the young club. Athletic took the two-time defending champs to the wire but in the end came up just short falling 2-1.

Hartford Athletic will be back at it next Saturday as they take on Indy Eleven in Indianapolis, IN. You can watch the match by tuning in to ESPN+ at 7 PM.

When Louisville City FC needed a moment of quality against ATL UTD 2 last Friday, it was Brian Ownby that provided it as he picked out Abdou Mbacke Thiam with an inch-perfect cross for the game-winning goal. Ownby and Louisville have yet to really get into top gear so far this season but that could change this weekend.

Hartford Athletic teams up with CJSA as Official Youth Soccer Partner

Hartford, CT (March 20, 2019) — Hartford Athletic announced today that the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association (CJSA) is joining Connecticut’s new professional soccer club as an Official Youth Soccer Partner. In partnership, Hartford Athletic will provide special benefits and opportunities to youth players and coaches across the state, including preferred ticket pricing for CJSA players, families, and coaches as well as special access to training and development opportunities. 

“We are thrilled to partner with the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association as we work together to grow the game we love in the state we love,” said Hartford Athletic COO Donovan Powell. “It is our promise to provide special experiences for youth players across the region, and this partnership allows us not only to deliver on that promise but also to express our gratitude to all the coaches, administrators, and parents who volunteer their time to share the beautiful game with the next generation.”

Hartford Athletic Battle in 2-1 Loss

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Hartford Athletic scored the first goal in Club history on Saturday, falling to Charleston Battery 2-1 in a back and forth affair.

The Battery started the scoring in the 18' when Zeiko Lewis slipped behind the back line and finished a beautifully chipped ball just past the outstretched hand off Athletic keeper Jacob Lissek to take an early 1-0 lead. Charleston controlled play for much of the first half but failed to break through again. Hartford Athletic defender Raymond Lee delivered a tremendous performance and was in on goal late in the first half just missing over the bar. Charleston took a 1-0 lead into the half.

Hartford Athletic came out strong in the second half battling all over the pitch only to see Charleston's Dante Marini come off the bench to finish off the Battery's second goal after a scramble in the box in the 73'.

Hartford Athletic did not fold as the match wore on with a handball in the box delivering Hartford a chance at history in the 82'. Athletic Captain Philip Rasmussen stepped up to the ball and delivered the Club's first goal in history bringing the match to 2-1.

Svantesson, in his second year with the Battery, poured in the equalizer for the Battery in their season opening match against Ottawa Fury FC. Svantensson scored a career high 11 goals for the Tulsa Roughnecks in 2017.

Hartford Athletic and WTNH News 8 Team Up to Broadcast 17 Live Matches in 2019

Hartford/New Haven, CT (March 11, 2019) — WTNH News 8 and Hartford Athletic, Connecticut’s professional soccer team, have partnered to feature 17 LIVE games for the Club’s Inaugural 2019 USL Championship Season on WTNH’s sister station WCTX MyTV9.

Starting in mid-June, Hartford Athletic will begin play at its new home in historic Dillon Stadium.

Hartford Athletic to Start Home Schedule At Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field

We are writing to provide an update that we will begin our season at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field on May 4 through mid-June at which point we will move to our new home at Dillon Stadium.  Our mission is not just to bring pro soccer to Connecticut, but to aid in the revitalization of the city and state by reviving the historic Dillon Stadium, an important public asset. Construction continues to make great progress, but we need more time as our goal is to make Dillon Stadium perfect before we open the doors to our community.

May 4th will be a historic day for Connecticut soccer, and we are so excited to bring together our community in an attempt to set an attendance record for an inaugural USL home opener.

A former standout at Columbia University, Dylan Castanheira broke the Ivy League’s single-season record for goals-against average in his senior season (0.513) and was named the conference’s Defender of the Year. Castanheira was invited to the MLS Combine this past January and while he was selected by FC Dallas in the Fourth Round of the MLS SuperDraft, the 6-foot-2 goalkeeper elected to join the professional ranks with ATL UTD 2, signing a deal that will likely make him the club’s first choice between the sticks this season.

Atlanta United 2 returns 8 players from a challenging 2018 season. ATL UTD 2 finished the season with a record of 7-17-10, coming in 14th in the Eastern Conference. The top 3 scorers from last season, Jon Gallagher, Lagos Kunga, and Romario Williams, have all been promoted to Atlanta United’s first team.

Pre-Season Update: Athletic takes 3 out of 4 Friendlies

There's snow on the ground in Connecticut but it hasn't kept Hartford Athletic off the pitch. Over the past two weeks, Hartford has participated in four friendlies, winning three.

On Friday, February 15th, Hartford traveled to New Jersey for a closed scrimmage with New York Red Bulls II. Hartford drew first blood as Wojciech Wójcik found some open space and put a header in the back of the net off a corner kick. In the second half, a loose ball in front of the net was calmly gathered by Alex Dixon and poked past the keeper for Hartford's second goal of the day. Stingy defense the rest of the way helped Hartford hold the score for a 2-0 victory.

Just a few days later, Hartford traveled south to Melbourne, Florida for the remainder of their preseason training. After a few training sessions (and beach sessions) the Club squared off with Miami FC. In a chaotic first half, Miami forward Mohamed Thiaw fired the opening salvo, scoring in just the 5th minute. 10 minutes later, a Hartford corner kick led to a scramble in the Miami box and ended with a penalty being awarded. Alex Dixon stepped up to the spot and slotted home the chance to tie the match up at 1.

Hartford would take the lead in the 18th minute after a through ball found Dixon down the right side, who punched the ball past an on-rushing keeper for his second goal of the match. Miami would add another goal in the 23rd minute to tie it at 2.

The tie would finally be broken in the 67th minute. Miami's Lloyd Sam picked up the ball near midfield before dashing into the Hartford box where he found Thiaw who slotted the chance away for his second goal of the match. Hartford created chances late in the match but could not finish, ultimately falling to Miami 3-2.

On Tuesday, Hartford squared off against Orlando City B. Just like he did against Red Bulls 2, Wójcik started off the scoring in the 25th minute to put Hartford ahead 1-0. Hartford surrendered a goal quickly in the second half to level the score. In the 93rd minute, still level, Sebastian Dalgaard was fouled hard and a penalty was awarded to Hartford. Jose Angulo stepped up and beat the keeper to give Hartford their second win of the preseason, 2-1.

The home side found themselves with the lead after slotting away a goal in the 25th minute. But Hartford answered back quickly in the 39th minute with a goal from Sebastian Dalgaard from the top of the box. Shortly after the half, Jose Angulo drew a penalty just outside the box. Angulo scored on the ensuing free kick to put Hartford ahead for good, 2-1.
