Welcome to this week’s edition of The Roundup, where we keep you updated on all things happening during the offseason, as well as what's going on around the United Soccer League and the Soccer world. This week, two standout performers from last season committed to another season in Green and Blue. We spoke to both of them to get their reaction on staying in Hartford, what they've been up to this offseason and an idea of what next season looks like!
Danny Barrera and Gabi Torres will return to Hartford Athletic in 2021!
This past week, Hartford Athletic announced that captain Danny Barrera will be staying with the club for the 2021 season, as will Gabriel Torres who had a breakout first year in Hartford.
While Barrera juggled his youngest son in his arms, he spoke about what he has been doing to keep fit during the offseason. “I’ve been training, I took about a month off to recover and heal all of my knocks, little jog here and there and some ball work.” Likewise, when asked about ways to keep fit in the offseason, Torres said, “When the weather is good and sunny I try to run a lot, I go to the gym and work on the upper body, things to keep me in shape”.
Last season, Torres and Barrera had a great on-field connection, as well as off the field with other teammates. Both players have kept in touch with members of last year’s team during the offseason months. “My wife and I went to visit Kevin Politz in New Jersey, we stayed with him for a couple of weeks. I’ve been talking to Matheus (Silva) and Cheno (Guzmán), I try to stay in contact with all the guys.” When asked about his off-season activities, Barrera said “I like to golf, I played with one of the guys the other week. I get outside with the kids and the dog and we play Disc Golf too.”
Torres and Barrera will have extra motivation to stay fit this offseason after finding out they will be playing in Hartford for another season. Gabi Torres said “I’m grateful for an opportunity to come back, I’m thankful for the fans and everybody in Hartford. Hopefully, I’ll be able to work even harder next year and perform even better for the fans and for the club.”
Looking towards next season, Torres was excited about the prospect of using the experience he gained this past season. “Hopefully, I can be someone that the new guys can come to and feel comfortable with. We are a big family and one team and we have the same goals so we need to be on the same page.”
Being one of the most senior players on last season’s roster, Barrera is a player who will very likely be one of the most experienced on next season’s squad. When asked about the prospect of building into next season, Barrera said “The organization learned so much about the way we wanna do things. This year we have an identity and a mindset that was instilled in us by Radhi Jaïdi and we have a style of play and identity. If we keep building on that intensity we brought last year to training and games, I think we can only get better.”
Barrera and Torres are the first two returning players to be announced for the 2021 season. With both of them coming off the back of impressive seasons, Athletic fans will be looking forward to more of the same in 2021!

The soccer world reacts to Diego Maradona’s passing
This past week, the Soccer world was deeply saddened by the passing of legendary Argentinian soccer player Diego Maradona. Fans, players, and coaches of all ages and backgrounds came together to remember one of the greatest players of all time.
Among many other players around the world, Lionel Messi paid tribute to Maradona in Barcelona’s four-nil win against Spanish Club Osasuna last weekend. After scoring a sensational solo goal, the Argentine removed his jersey and revealed a Maradona jersey from his time with Argentinian Club Newells Old Boys.
Here in America, Nicolas Lodeiro, an Argentinian midfielder for the Seattle Sounders also paid tribute to Maradona. Before the Western Conference semifinals against FC Dallas, Lodeiro wore a Maradona number 10 Seattle Sounders jersey.
Maradona will be remembered for his 1986 World Cup performances and “Goal of the Century” against England where he dribbled past five English defenders and the goalkeeper. He went on to score five goals in the tournament and Argentina lifted the World Cup trophy.
